Kent State University’s College of Architecture + Environmental Design (CAED) Cleveland Studio is co-located with the CUDC and is the home of the Masters of Urban Design and the Master of Landscape Architecture programs as well as select students from the Master of Architecture program. CUDC staff support the academic programs in several key ways: coordinating the International Design Exchange (INDEX) Studio, leading the Midwest Urban Design Charrette, and serving as capstone advisers. Learn more about the areas of the CAED academic programs where CUDC staff serve as educators and browse student work from those courses below.
urban design Charrette
Every year, the CUDC brings students from KSU’s College of Architecture & Environmental Design to a city or town in the Great Lakes Region that is facing an urban design challenge. Students and CUDC staff work side by side with community members over the course of the weekend to quickly generate design ideas, which are later distilled into a final report. If you are interested in hosting a charrette in your own community, contact the CUDC to learn about the application process.

INDEX Studio
The International Design Exchange (INDEX) Studio is part of the curriculum for the Master of Architecture and Master of Urban Design programs in Kent State’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED). Students in this annual, 15-week research studio create design projections for Cleveland and an international site, providing new insights into our familiar home city and establishing a better understanding of the shared challenges facing global cities. Studios have traveled to Havana, Cuba; Beirut, Lebanon; Medellín, Colombia; and Curitiba, Brazil.
